Tell her that 101594 people downloaded TIGCC, and 534170 people downloaded VTI, and if there was a complaint, the files would be removed.

I didn't make those numbers up.

I think by "Free Java" he means that his mother really knows nothing about computers and therefore fears the unknown, a rational fear but people with fears like that should strive to find out more and learn about what they don't know so that they know more. And yes, those numbers above are quite real.

I meant to say that my mom thinks that sits with free downloads almost always contain viruses.

And bfr's mom thinks that it's Java? I think you were right, bcherry.

That is absurd! Sites with free downloads written in obscure languages almost always contain viruses, but I can guarantee you there is no harm in downloading TIGCC or VTI. In fact, both (at least TIGCC, probably vti if you asked Rusty Wagner) are open source, meaning you can look at the source code for the program, showing they have nothing to hide. You can see the program's code, and any virus contained would also be visible, but there is none to be found.

I should probably do that. I need to show my mom the actual program to prove that it doesn't contain a virus. But she still probably won't trust it becaus she will say that it is "hidden" or "that is what they want you to think." but it is worth a try.

Show your mother the statistics.

Hmmm. I guess its worth a try. You're not going to get anywhere looking at the source though, because you wouldn't understand it. I don't even understand it. I was just saying that if it had a virus, it would not be open-source. But believe it or not, there are plenty of people who write free programs and don't try to wreck other people's lives.

Tell your mother to stop being a pessimist.
Tell her that THOUSANDS downloaded it without a virus.

Tell her that I downloaded the files myself a few times each, scanned each with multiple virus scanners, installed them each, and ran a full system scan with no viruses.

Yay! This is progress.

Downloading files to a calculator will only do the computer harm if the computer is broken... But that IS progress. I have lots of suggestions of games that you should download for the TI-86; there are some very good ones.

Hold on, let me get my mom so she can see what 2 calc experts and the rest of the ti'calc people on ti-calc.org say.
