It may classify as an action-RPG, but not as an RPG. Please remember that an RPG is a type of game where you use swords and battle monsters and gain levels.

It's "swords". Plus, that's not at all the definition of an RPG. An RPG is simply a game based in an immersive world where the intent is to really get the player involved in taking the "role" of one of the individual characters in that world, and live their life and follow them through everything. Most importantly, the world needs to be convincing enough, and the plot deep enough, and the characters real enough to actually feel a part of the world. This is why RPG fans (like myself) get so attached to successful games like Final Fantasy X, whereas non-RPG fans, who are incapable of really feeling a connection to the characters and world and story in a game don't understand at all what the heck FFX fans are thinking with being so obsessed with the game.

RPG=Role Playing Game ;D. You are sombody...you usually are on a mission...sometimes there is a discription at the beginning of the program on what the plot is...although you already new that, right Vladik? Actually, you do because you've used the term correctly before, but anyway, I think a James Bond game would be an RPG. But I could still make it....

THE ROLE YOU ARE PLAYING IS JAMES BOND! IT IS AN RPG (aka Role Playing Game)! I may still make it though.

Ok, so you're saying that when you play phoenix you take the role of a space pilot, therefore phoenix is an rpg? No. What makes roleplaying games different is that they are character driven, rather than action driven. James Bond is not really about James bond. You could switch james bond out with any random character and it would be essentially the same game, because those games are based on the action not the characters. Yet if you took a Final Fantasy game and replaced, say Tidus from FFX with James Bond, you would have an entirely different game because the actual character of Tidus is so integral to the plot of the game, and the game's appeal.

No, think about. What is the most important part of a regular James Bond game? Ill give you a hint: it's not James Bond. Sure, James Bond is cool, but what's cooler is running around with a bunch of cool weapons and blowing things up and driving fast cars and hooking up with hot women. It doesn't matter at all whether there is a story, and the story is always the last thing put in. Look at Halo 2, it is primarily an action game. Sure there's a story, but no one really cares that much, and the game barely even had a real ending. Now look at Final Fantasy VII. What's the most important part? It's the story, and more specifically the characters. The entire game is built around the characters and the world. The game system is built around this thing "Materia", an integral part of the story. The game engine could not have been developed without first considering the story. When you play the game, you step into the game world, you become one of these characters you're follwing around the world. In James Bond you're just controlling him, but care little about him, just about the game play. This is why it takes a very specific kind of gamer to appreciate the RPG, why some people hate RPGs so much, and other people love them. If you aren't the kind of person who can feel a connection with a game character and game story, then you're better off sticking to James Bond and Halo. But if you're willing to get into the world of a well crafted RPG, then you're going to have a lot of fun.
Note that in more recent times, this term "RPG" has been used more loosely to describe games that don't quite fit the traditional sense of the title, it is now a style of gameplay rather than a style of game.

Vladik fixed the smilies. OK, bcherry, you win. Um, I said that it is action, not RPG before bcherry, but bcherry made the whole RPG argument... So I guess bcherry won and I helped a little?

When I began the "it's not an rpg" argument, I was refuting BFR's claim it was, and supporting Vladik's claim it was not.
