I don't know how to program in Perl, but I do know that it is a handy script language and is popular and can do some cool stuff on the computer. Java and javascript can do some cool stuff too....

Perl is just a simple C-esque scripting, interpreted, language that is handy to do small repetive tasks, but really can't be used for anything too big and complex, because it's speed is just nothing compared to C.

Interpreted? Can't be used for anything useful.

What are you talking about? Perl is an interpreted language just like Python. Interpreted != Slow. It makes it more portable anyways, and there is no need for a compiler, only an interpreter. Also, that makes it in some ways easier to write, because there isnt a lot of unneccesary syntax and commands to make a compiled program ready to run.

But you must agree that compiled is better than interpreted in speed.

I don't know about Perl, but Python lets you do interactive sessions with the interpreter, so you can debug single lines of code! It's also handy for doing simple calculations or figuring out the length of a string withiut writing a whole program!

There are probably perl functions for that. In fact, even most C and Java compilers have that ability.

perl is involved in many other languages. JavaScript, CSS, C#, all that has some correlation to Perl somewhere.

I looked into perl once, and I quite the same day. You see, Perl is what some people refer to as a "write-only" language. Code that you wrote a week ago is almost unreadable. Perl programmers love using nasty habits and shortcuts that make their code a pain in the arse (cuss word!) to read.
Oh, and Java is interpreted, btw.

That cuss word was @rse, btw. Just to show how fucking bad this censoring is. Until it is fixed, I will use excessive ammounts of bad language in order to make my posts unreadable.
