I do not think so. TI has basically done everything they can with a calculator. Any new updates and you can't call it a Calculator anymore!

Built-in TIGCC, more memory, speed, etc.

built in tigcc? No way. There is no way a calculator could run any sort of decent compiler, that makes no sense. What would be a welcome addition is an improved BASIC, that runs as an interpreted language but is faster, like MLC. Color screens, more RAM, sound, wireless linkports etc are all dumb additions that many people suggest, because they would only cause the price to go up. TI should instead refine the software it has on the same technology, and lower the price.

You made a great point with the price, bcherry. All they should do now, in my eyes, is update the software (OS, AMS) that the have for the calculators.

Look at Detached Solutions, for example. They made a 3d grapher for the 83/83+, and it runs faster than the 68k built in version. TI should look at some of the very intelligent members of the programming community and use them to its advantage to improve its current software. If they wanted to try and combat the "we want color, or higher resolution" demands, why not add default grayscale support? If TI outright supported grayscale, many of its graphing applications would be far more usable and useful. It would at least make shading functions and the 3d grapher much better looking, and make TI Calculators even more attractive, plus attract more gaming potential, which although perhaps a little educationally destructive, is a very good selling point of TI's that they should not waste.

actually, TI DID recruit Detached Solutiojns to help them with some of their apps...and they also packaged PuzzPack wiht 83+SE's

Yeah. We should have that and the improved BASIC.

Yes, they did. But barely. More importantly, the only independent contractors TI gets are people to develop flash apps, rather than help creating things to integrate into the OS, like faster and more functional graphing routines.

hmm...true, but they may have those people they need and aren't using them.
BOTTOM LINE: TI should upgrade its 83+ OS and 73 OS

Why would you want color screens and the such? Teachers would be more aware of you playing games. Bcherry made a good point with the issue of software. It would be good if the calculator BASIC allowed the ordinary user to program as he did AND let them use advanced things such as regiusters in their programs. The 68k 3D grapher has got to go. TI is obviously getting lazy with their software design. So NO, TI does not need a new calculator but YES, TI needs to release a new OPERATING SYSTEM for their calculators.

No, you don't need to be able to play with registers. You need a refined BASIC language with a more capable engine that works like many good scripting lanugaes, especially python. Then just refine the interpreter so that they run much faster, like MLC, and TI will have gone a long way towards improving their calculator line.

well, the refined BASIC language would be an OS update!
