It that group a web-based (the members never see each other) or a land-based (the members meet and talk to each other) group?

My group (oragestudio) was started by Vincent Corfdir (Orage) at some time I don't know along with some of his friends, in France. He got a bunch of members, all of whom were smart and most of whom knew each other, mostly from France. Then for some reason I don't fully understand, he asked me to join last fall, and I became the first American to join. I've never met any of the other members in person, nor do I speak French, but it has been a useful resource.

Programming games using an premade engine is the same as making a custom level for a game...

You have to make your own engine if you want your games to have any worth, though it is fun to tweak other people's engines. You make engines so it is easier for your to program. For example, if you have a RPG engine down, all that you will have to do is make the maps and yo can run the RPG. Personally, I like RPGs with randomly generated maps.

depends on the type of engine and what you want to do. For example, most first-person shooters use one of a few different engines. I believe Doom 3 used the old Quake engine, yet was far more complex and advanced than Quake. A good engine allows endless customization. When I am done with my metroid engine, someone could take it and make another metroid game, with different maps, graphics, enemies, weapons, etc, and that would be a ton of work because of the AI, behaviors of tiles and weapons and levels and bosses involved. ALthough it is true that with RPGs most engines are simple and no one would make anything fancy with it.

Yeah. The ZOOM BASIC racing program that I downloaded on my ti-86 is programmed very well but in an unusual way. I have never seen the programmer's method before. Maybe you could try it out with an emulator.
