Feel free to post in this forum to discuss TI-83 series gaming.
I want to start out saying that BASIC CAN create good games.

Yes indeed, BASIC does can be used to program a variety of good games. But it is just slow, and you usually can't make good graphics.

No; I don't mean what you think, just visit here, here, or here to see what I mean. These games are fast, and they have great graphics.

Of course, as we discussed before, those are not "true basic". A true basic game should be able to be typed in by hand on a new calculator and work with nothing else installed.

And also, one of the bonuses of BASIC is stability, you cant wreck your calc (well, temporarily I mean) with a BASIC program like you can with ASM, but those games do have that potential because they incorporate asm routines.

You are not safe with 68k BASIC; the exec command can hold you hostage. (A funny story-I opened a BASIC virus and noticed that the meneacing routines relied completely on the Exec command)

true, but Exec is pseudo-asm. And a very limited exception.

I believe that there is a program that converts ASM to Exec code directly.

Of course, the program has to be ASM, not a PPG.

There are a few like that. I've never tried one though.

Me neither; so I'm unsure that it works.

What's a PPG and Exec code? Exec seems strangely familiar...

68k ASM files are frequently compressed upon compilation by a compression scgeme called PPG compression. The compressed file on a calculator consists of 2 parts-a .PPG file, and a small .ASM launcher. PPG compression reduces the file size by 50%, so it is a VERY handy utility.

Exec is a command that executes ASM in a string format.

So is that what you were trying to do before? Hands and feet.

That was on-calc compilable Z80 ASM!

No; I don't mean what you think, just visit here, here, or here to see what I mean. These games are fast, and they have great graphics. It seems that the author of these games, Kevin Ouellet, has recently registered on this forum! Please tell us about how you made these excellent graphical games using just simple BASIC and Assembly tools.

Hi! I think you mailed me about it so here we go: For making Reuben Quest (the BASIC grayscale RPG featured at ticalc.org) I used Omnicalc to achieve grayscale and xLIB to display maps quickly, but that's quite a long story. I suggest you download and read my guide to TI-83+ SE BASIC grayscale so you can have an overview on how it works. www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/358/35823.htmlROL3 use asm utility too but it was released before xLIB and Omnicalc 1.2x so it's very slow and my code was poorly written. Speeding it up would be a complete rewrite and the game would not even fit on the regular 83+ . But maybe someday I will start that Reign of Legends 4 project . Right now I'm working on this:

Looks [glow=green,2,000]AWESOME[/glow]! Please continue posting! Also, I am going to try to get my game on tical.org. It will most likely be called "bgame" and I will try to tell y'all 'bout it when it comes out.
